Course organization is one of the ways a teacher can help students succeed in an online course. Although I am an experienced teacher, I had never worked with Moodle before the pandemic, and it then became mandatory in my college. After an exploratory tour of the Moodle platform with a colleague, I set about adapting and transferring my course content in the advanced ESL (English Second Language) course. I want to share a few tips with you.

When the COVID pandemic closed down the colleges in the spring of 2020, we had to figure out the most efficient way to provide virtual services for our library users. Students use chat platforms to communicate with each other every day, so why not have them message a librarian for help? A platform, called Library H3lp, facilitates real-time chat in order for libraries to help their clients online. We used the platform to set up the Ask Us, Virtual Reference Desk at Champlain College Saint-Lambert.

Because of confinement and distance learning, students have difficulty motivating themselves behind their screens and focusing on one task at a time. Inspired by the Thèsez-vous activities offered to graduate students, I mobilized several colleagues to develop an online coaching service dedicated to the college student community.

During the last week of February, FADIO hosted its annual #SemaineFAD event, a single-track series of online sessions about Distance Education covering every part of Quebec’s educational system, from Early Childhood to Higher Ed. Despite its focus on Quebec, the French-speaking event attracted participants from different parts of the Francophone world and some comments from organizers made it clear that overseas participants were welcomed.

Further development of the platform was made possible by additional funding granted by Entente Canada-Québec relative à l'enseignement dans la langue de la minorité et à l'enseignement des langues secondes.This article on the second phase of the project describes a teacher’s experience with the platform and includes testimonials from teachers and students.

Assistive technologies are increasingly part of mainstream use, like audio books, predictive text or text production apps. I recently interviewed Rosie Arcuri, who has a great deal of knowledge of these technologies to learn more about the potential of smartphones as an assistive technology in the classroom. It would be beneficial, she says, if all people were aware of these technologies.

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The internet gives us access to vast free video resources. Yet in spite of these technological innovations, students still consume digital media mostly passively in classroom settings. Three free online platforms allow you to create different types of video-based tasks that engage your students more actively.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
