When students went on strike in 2012, a colleague and I used the extra time to launch a free online grammar checker website for our English Second Language college students. Now, after 6 years of development, the Virtual Writing Tutor is in its third incarnation. To see some of its evolution, see earlie stories about the development of this grammar checker published on Profweb in 2013. Better-looking, more powerful, and more accurate than ever before, it has attracted the interest of researchers and has corrected the writing of nearly a million learners from 211 countries. Here are 10 reasons why ESL teachers should consider using the Virtual Writing Tutor grammar checker with their college ESL students.

We have heard a lot about the negative effects of cell phones in the classroom. Most teachers will agree that texting, social networking and using other online communication apps on their smartphones will interfere with college students’ learning. However, many teachers do not realise the potential of these powerful devices in education.

In 2018, cell phones, tablets and computers combined with free applications or software give us the ability to create high quality video and broadcast it within moments. The internet gives us access to vast free video resources. Yet in spite of these technological innovations, students still consume digital media mostly passively in classroom settings. Three free online platforms allow you to create different types of video-based tasks that engage your students more actively.

It takes a great deal of energy to create synergy which, once it is in motion, becomes a source of energy in and of itself. In my three favourite presentations this year, the social aspects of education to energize both teaching and learning were critical. Lisa Deguire, Gina Lavine, Susan MacNeil and Norm Spatz (ESL Teachers from across Quebec), talked about creating synergy between multiple teachers in a diverse range of projects, using social networks (Facebook and Twitter), gamification (CourseCraft and ClassDojo) and thematic Web 2.0 tools (NewsActivist). They used the term ConNETivism to describe this type of cooperation in their workshop Move Over Constructivism, It’s Time for ”ConNETivism” (#309).

Have you ever imagined what a school might be like without teachers? No one to tell you when to start, what to write down or when to stop. A school where students progress according to their own pace and motivation, where they will be the principal actor in their development? It might seem like some sort of unrealistic utopia, but the École 42 is hedging its bets on their surprising educational program.

You have probably heard about the Universal Design of Learning (UDL). It supposes that the human brain functions roughly the same way from one person to another, but that each person learns differently. This model therefore suggests to vary and differ pedagogical strategies in order to reach all types of learners.
In this article, I will present a model to you that is seemingly similar, that I was able to experiment with in the context of developing professional competencies. It is the model 4Mat (Four Matters), developed 30 years ago, and that aims at offering learning activities and a pedagogical sequence that takes the 4 main learning styles into account. The model 4Mat, as with UDL, can be applied to all learners, regardless of their age, because it is established from neuroscientific studies that define the role of each area of the brain in the process of learning.

Written from the standpoint of a teacher, the "5 Tips" series is intended to be a helpful resource for teachers who are integrating technology into their everyday practice. In college teaching, heterogeneous classes where students and diverse personalities converge are the norm. This reality is also evident when observing the different ways that they react to technology. In this article, I identify 5 situations in which students might have more difficulty when faced with technology. I also suggest a few options on how to provide them with assistance.

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
