In this digital age, information is available to our students at the click of a Google search. They have access to amazing tools as well as unreliable information at the touch of a finger. As instructors, we have the opportunity to help guide this rushing river of data to benefit our students and ourselves. They’re online at home, on the bus, while they’re eating, while they watch TV, while they socialize, and sometimes while they are in class. So, why not take advantage of this almost natural proclivity, and make use of it for educational purposes?

At the Sommet sur l’Enseignement supérieur, in February 2013, it was announced that four CERACs (Centre d’expertise en reconnaissance des acquis et des compétences) would be created within the college network. The CEGEPs awarded a CERAC were: Cégep de Drummondville, Cégep de Ste-Foy, Cégep Marie-Victorin and Champlain Regional College. Over the last year, my colleagues and I have worked to design and develop a virtual space for communication and collaboration between these centers using Moodle (LMS). The goal was to create and support an online community of practice. The platform provides a space to bring together hundreds of pedagogical advisors in Recognition of Acquired Competencies (RAC), nearly twenty employees of the four CERACs and representatives from MESRS (Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de la Science).

SHERPA is a digital learning portfolio platform created within the Programme de Collaboration Université-Collège. It will enable academic support, promote learning acquisition and evaluation tracking, as well as affirm student development and production within an academic or professional context. SHERPA's IT infrastructure makes it simple and easy-to-use. Several IT partners, APOP, DECclic, Profweb and Vitrine technologie-éducation, support the application.

Concordia's Centre for Teaching and Learning Services (CTLS) states that its goal is ‘to start conversations with faculty members and graduate students about what makes good teaching and learning in order to share these ideas face-to-face, through workshops, the web and university-wide contacts.' Their website is an excellent expression of this philosophy.

Experiential learning is a means of moving from theory to application which allows for a fair amount of student discovery and serendipity to take place. Digital storytelling is a way for students to record, report or even be evaluated on their learning using modern technologies. The millennials, who are sometimes referred to as Generation C (and have a penchant for Creating, Collaborating and Communicating) seem enthusiastic about using mobile devices and technology. When students share what they learn through multimedia, they can even transport us to remote First Nations communities, providing us insight on places that we may never have the privilege to visit within our lifetimes. The result of combining their experiential learning with digital storytelling is most inspiring!

With the precipitous closure of CEGEPs due to COVID-19, many activities that make CEGEPs stimulating living environments and showcase student talent were cancelled. Gilbert Forest, a socio-cultural facilitator at Cégep André-Laurendeau, and its student services teamed up with the Théâtre Desjardins (a performance hall located inside Cégep André-Laurendeau) and la Brigade Liseurs Publics [in French] (the Public Readers Brigade) to create and maintain a Facebook page, La Minute Cultur.AL [in French], to connect with the students and break the isolation caused by the confinement. I spoke with Gilbert Forest to learn more about this unifying project.

In her Real Life Story entitled Apprendre et surprendre grâce à la CLAAC, Nicole Lanctôt, a teacher from the Cégep de Granby presents her active learning projects that are happening in a brand new Active Learning Classroom (ALC) designed for this type of pedagogy. In the present article, I will explain how we arrived at this point as a college, touching on the consultation and analysis process, the pedagogical reflections, our vision for the development of our milieu and the choices linked to the installation and renovation of 2 classrooms over the summer of 2017:

Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Kelly’s and Becki’s remarks are testimonials that providing flexible learning approaches builds contentment among students – helping Quebec college students master ICT profile skills.

The internet gives us access to vast free video resources. Yet in spite of these technological innovations, students still consume digital media mostly passively in classroom settings. Three free online platforms allow you to create different types of video-based tasks that engage your students more actively.

The active learning methods have in common of placing the students in the middle of the learning process. Their teachers can then also think about giving them a role in the planning of the evaluation. Active learning is inspired by real-life contexts that are meaningful for the students, which can increase their level of motivation for the tasks that are suggested to them. It encourages durable learnings rather than using only their short-term memory.
