The Pomodoro Technique

Andy Van Drom Editor, Profweb

When presenting my course during the first class of the semester, I used to tell my students I would rigorously respect the start and end times of our classes while scheduling breaks in a more flexible manner depending on that week’s content and activities. I’d never questioned this practice until I was stuck in a rather tedious meeting without knowing how long it would go on for. Time seemed to take on another dimension in the absence of precise markers. Realizing my students might feel the same way, I decided to look for a more effective method to organize and manage time in my classes. I found this in the Pomodoro technique.

My Use of Francomane — Remedial French as a Second Language Courses

Rana El Gharbie Teacher, Vanier College

As a teacher, I am always on the lookout for new resources for teaching French as a Second Language (FSL). While there are numerous textbooks, online resources are rare for students in remedial courses. You can then imagine my joy when I discovered Francomane last year. That website, fun and easy to use, is very popular with my students.

3D-print Technology for Smartphone-based Physics Experiments

Chris Isaac Larnder Teacher, Cégep John Abbott College

I’m not that great at building things, which, I guess, is why I ended up being a physicist and not an engineer. As previously reported on Profweb, I have been running accelerometer experiments with smartphones to help my students learn physics concepts through digital-era equivalents of “real world” examples. With the help of students, we developed 3D-printed equipment to make these experiments more accessible to our growing network of teachers outside of our college.

Using Concept Maps to Promote Deeper Learning of Grammar

Susan Drolet Teacher, Cégep Garneau

I've never liked flow charts and mind maps. They're supposed to simplify things (I think) but I find them confusing. So when I took a Performa course by Christian Barrette, an expert in concept maps, I was really stepping out of my comfort zone. But that's when I learned that while a concept map resembles a mind map, it's much different. During the course, I had to develop concept maps I could use with my students and I became so enamoured with their potential to help students learn, that they became the subject of my master's research paper. I've since used them regularly in class and the results have been quite positive.

Virtual Reality to Foster Real-World Empathy

Johnathan Mina Teacher, Collège LaSalle
Pascale Warmoes Teacher, Collège LaSalle

We are always on the lookout for new ideas that have the potential to translate into innovative and challenging educational strategies for our students. After experimenting with the use of smart pens for peer learning and the integration of video games to stimulate deep learning, we turned to the possibilities offered by virtual reality. This technology has allowed us to provide our students with immersive experiences that contribute to developing greater empathy for topics we discuss in our respective courses.
