How and Why to Use Apps In The ESL Classroom

Josianne Beaudoin-Lacroix Teacher, Cégep de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue

I have been interested in integrating technology in my classroom since I started teaching ESL (English as a second language) at Cégep de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue. I find it is even more important at the college level where many lessons can still be dominated by teachers talking.

A Program-Specific Approach to Note Taking in the Digital Era

Mathieu Plasse Teacher, Cégep de Sainte-Foy

In the industry graphic designers need to know, master, and constantly use emerging software and technologies. This is inevitably reflected in the classrooms of graphic design students. As graphic design teachers at Cégep de Sainte-Foy, in a laptop program, my colleague Anne-Claire Delisle and I have created a flexible way for our students to take notes on the computers that they all have in the classroom. We wanted each student’s notes to reflect their individuality. By coming up with their own notes, the students are obligated to invest themselves in their studies and better integrate the content.

Videoconferencing to Build Bridges Between Student Communities

Muna Shafiq Teacher, Cégep Limoilou

In 2017 and 2018, I organized 2 very successful trips to Vancouver with my students, enrolled in the Language profile of Cégep Limoilou’s Arts, Letters and Communication program. Because this type of cultural exchange adds great value to the career path of our students, but also to that of students in British Columbia, in the fall 2019 semester, I organized a virtual encounter to continue forging ties between these young people living on both sides of the country.

A Lightboard Studio to Record Professional-Looking Educative Videos Simply and Rapidly

Caroline Cormier Teacher, Cégep André-Laurendeau

Do you know Lightboard studios? They are video recording studios where teachers record themselves through a pane of glass on which they write. An application then inverts the picture so that even if the teacher is writing from their left to their right, the text can be read clearly in the video. As a bonus: a clever lighting system makes the fluorescent ink used look even more impactful.

Using Visual Storytelling to Explore Distressing Topics in the College Classroom

Daniel Goldsmith Teacher, Dawson College

How do you speak about trauma without it becoming too personal? How do you provide support to a student whose painful memories and emotions might be triggered by such a discussion? An ECQ grant (Entente Canada-Quebec) in 2018-2019 allowed Mark McGuire at John Abbott College and I to develop a website presenting pedagogical materials using visual storytelling as a means of dealing with disturbing topics.
