About the Author

She works as a teacher-researcher at Cégep André-Laurendeau where she has taught English as a second language for over 20 years. She offers workshops on student success, screening and accommodation, and ICTs for students with reading problems, learning disabilities and other disabilities. She is currently managing a project on using students’ smartphones in postsecondary teaching that is financially supported by the Entente Canada-Québec.

Exploring Pedagogically Sound Practices for the Use of Smartphones

We, the Adaptech Research Network, are looking at pedagogically-sound ways to use students’ smartphones in post-secondary teaching. Thanks to funding from the Entente Canada-Québec, we have had the last 2 terms to learn more about this topic. The first step in our research was to observe, so it was back to school for Laura King as she entered Anick Legault’s Introductory Psychology class to see how she was using this technology with her students.

Our most recent project at the Adaptech Research Network has been to update our Free and Inexpensive Technology Database (FANDI), with a focus on the latest mobile, Windows and Macintosh products. These technologies not only meet the needs of students in many Cegep career and technical programs, but they also address one of Quebec’s greatest challenges: maintaining a qualified workforce in the areas of industry and technology. Furthermore, FANDI supports students in other college programs, students with various visible and non-visible disabilities and those who have weaker language skills. Read below to find out how the database was developed and to learn about some of our favorite technologies.

Making the Grade: College Students with Disabilities and Academic Success

The Adaptech Research Network consists of a team of academics, students and stakeholders. Since 1996, we have been conducting bilingual research on postsecondary students with and without disabilities by examining factors which contribute to academic success. For example, in a six-year archival study, the key facilitator for 192 college graduates with disabilities was being registered for campus disability related services. When 633 college students with various disabilities were compared to 40,262 students without disabilities, we found that the 2 groups graduated at the same rate, although students with disabilities took a little longer.

Teachers’ Use of ICTs: What Do Students Think?

In the context of a research project funded by the “Fonds de Recherche du Québec sur la société et la culture” (FRQRSC), 311 students from Dawson College and Cégep André-Laurendeau were surveyed online, in French or English, about their teachers’ practices in the use of ICTs and cyber-learning. This survey allowed the researchers to collect data on the teachers’ use of technology as well as the students’ level of satisfaction regarding this use.

Students with learning disabilities can have difficulties in a variety of domains. While ICTs do not provide the answer to all of the concerns of students with LDs, they do make a huge difference in making students' lives easier and their academic work more efficient and successful.

There’s an undetected population in francophone cegeps that needs screening and accommodation so that they can complete their cegep degrees. It costs the system to provide resources to accommodate people with disabilities, but it's a lot cheaper than the price tag of failure.
