HAL is the name of a full size mannequin simulator for nursing and paramedic students at John Abbott College. HAL allows students to experience situations in a safe and nonthreatening setting, promoting integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills development.

The Nursing Department at John Abbott College is now using two nursing simulators or manikins as part of a program to encourage the use of information technology. The hardware, however, is only part of the equation. Teachers need institutional support to adapt to the changes that are happening around them.
