About the Author

He holds a master's degree in science (biotechnology) and a doctorate in philosophy (ethics of science). Jean-François Sénéchal publishes in both science and philosophy. As a lecturer, he teaches the course Ethics and Professionalism at Université Laval. Each year, this course welcomes more than 600 students. Students explore the main ethical problems and issues associated with their social role as engineers. Jean-François Sénéchal is also a leading figure in pedagogical innovation and university pedagogy in a digital context. In 2019, he was the recipient of the Prix de la Ministre de l'enseignement supérieur. This award recognizes the inventiveness and commitment of those who work in CEGEPs and universities to increase the effectiveness of learning strategies.

If you ask teenagers to do their homework they’ll find a thousand other things to do. But put them in front of a video game, and they’ll focus on it for hours. How exactly do game designers create this kind of engagement? And what would happen if we applied these principles to teaching?
