About the Author

She received a Honourable Mention from AQPC in 2018. She has also given presentations at AQPC and is on their English editorial board. She has been teaching at LaSalle College for 13 years. Before teaching she worked in the garment industry for 25 years. In fact you could say fashion is in her blood as growing up she worked in her father’s clothing manufacture. She has finished the work for her Masters with PERFORMA and her dissertation has been submitted. Because she really enjoys experimenting new technology with her students she plans to start a PhD at Concordia in experiential learning in the fall of 2018. When people tell her that she is crazy to start a PhD at her age and ask her what she is going to do with it, she answers, “ I don't know, I’m taking it one day at a time”!

Concept Mapping: A Great Instructional Strategy That Encourages Transfer of Knowledge and Critical Thinking

Heather Sorella Teacher, Collège LaSalle

A while back, in a marketing strategy course of the Fashion Marketing Program, I integrated a project where students would identify the problems experienced by a fashion retailer who was struggling. They then had to propose solutions, find objectives and strategies and create an action plan. It became a very linear project for the students: 2 assignments of 20 marks each. The students would get into groups of 5 and divide up the work, “You do part A, you do part B and I’ll do part C…” etc. Each student would summit their part and the assignment had very little cohesiveness. I even had to tell the students to at least assign the proofreading of the entire work to one of the members of the group and make sure they all used the same font. I could tell which of the students were doing the work.

Integrating E-Commerce Skills into Our Pedagogy

Heather Sorella Teacher, Collège LaSalle
Maureen Buck Teacher, Collège LaSalle

This is how two teachers, Heather Sorella and Maureen Buck, from the Fashion Marketing program at College LaSalle, came to develop an E-commerce AEC. During an industry internship, Maureen recognized the growing demand for E-commerce in the fashion industry. Both teachers decided that their students needed to have E-commerce knowledge in preparation for entering the workplace. As a result, the Fashion Department Co-coordinator, Sandra Parker, decided to implement a one semester 180 hour (120 academic/ 60 internship) E-commerce Retail Specialist AEC.

Where Fashion Meets Technology

Heather Sorella Teacher, Collège LaSalle

Heather Sorella feels that ilasalle's online curriculum is bringing the needle trade out of prehistoric times. Dynamically synchronous and highly international, ilasalle is bringing fashion education to another level.
