Andy Van Drom enseigne l'anglais, langue seconde, et la linguistique depuis 2005, d'abord à l'Université Laval, puis, depuis 2012, au Cégep Limoilou. Après avoir terminé des études doctorales en linguistique, il travaille maintenant à temps partiel à une maîtrise en enseignement collégial avec Performa. Andy a également publié 3 manuels chez Pearson ERPI et a développé plusieurs ressources éducatives libres en format numérique. Son grand intérêt pour les outils technopédagogiques et l'apprentissage actif l'ont mené à travailler avec Profweb, où il est éditeur depuis 2017. En 2019, il a reçu une Mention d'honneur de l'AQPC et le prix EF Excellence Award in Language Teaching.

Digital Tools to Support an Inclusive Pedagogical Practice

This featured report aims to explore the features and possible uses of certain digital tools that can make learning accessible to all students as part of an inclusive pedagogical practice. Following the principles of universal design for learning (UDL), the tools presented, which are free or already part of the technological environment of college teachers, offer students a variety of means of representation, action, expression and engagement.

Flipgrid: A Video-Based Discussion Forum

Flipgrid is a free Microsoft-owned platform that allows teachers to create “grids” to facilitate video discussions. As on a regular electronic discussion forum, teachers can add questions or discussion prompts (called topics). Students can then post their video responses, which are organized in a tiled grid structure, and consult their peers’ responses. Each grid can hold an unlimited number of topics and each topic can hold an unlimited number of responses, giving teachers great flexibility on how to use the tool.

The Pomodoro Technique

When presenting my course during the first class of the semester, I used to tell my students I would rigorously respect the start and end times of our classes while scheduling breaks in a more flexible manner depending on that week’s content and activities. I’d never questioned this practice until I was stuck in a rather tedious meeting without knowing how long it would go on for. Time seemed to take on another dimension in the absence of precise markers. Realizing my students might feel the same way, I decided to look for a more effective method to organize and manage time in my classes. I found this in the Pomodoro technique.

linkr: Student Interaction and Collaboration without Boundaries

Active learning, distance learning, and personalized learning (whether or not integrated in a flipped or blended learning approach) are pedagogical methods that need little to no introduction. The opportunities and benefits they offer have been documented in many a Profweb article or real-life story over the years. linkr, a teaching platform and global network of teachers and students, takes these concepts to the next level while making them easy for teachers to integrate into curricula. Cofounded by Humanities teacher Gabriel Flacks (Champlain College St-Lambert) and partners Gregory Mattei, Antoine Ricquebourg and Pierre-Olivier Bonin, linkr harnesses the power of technology to remove the physical boundaries between students and teachers around the world.

Grammar à la Carte — How a HyFlex Course Design Makes my Students’ Learning More Effective

After designing the course framework for a field-specific English as a second language course in Cégep Limoilou’s Video Game Design program in 2016, I wanted to streamline the learning experience for my students. To overcome the challenges inherent to a multi-level language course, I decided to implement the HyFlex (hybrid-flexible) approach for the course’s grammar component in the fall 2018 semester. This allowed the students to choose between attending an in-person grammar workshop or reviewing and practising at home. The impacts on learning, motivation and grades have been very positive across the board.

Virtual Reality in the Classroom: What are the Possibilities at College?

In recent years, we have observed a growing interest in the college network for the educational potential of virtual reality. In 2014, the Vitrine technologie-éducation presented a virtual laboratory on the topic, before organizing exploratory activities for college IT-reps in 2016 and 2017. However, we had little feedback on the actual use of this technology by teachers.
