Our most recent project at the Adaptech Research Network has been to update our Free and Inexpensive Technology Database (FANDI), with a focus on the latest mobile, Windows and Macintosh products. These technologies not only meet the needs of students in many Cegep career and technical programs, but they also address one of Quebec’s greatest challenges: maintaining a qualified workforce in the areas of industry and technology. Furthermore, FANDI supports students in other college programs, students with various visible and non-visible disabilities and those who have weaker language skills. Read below to find out how the database was developed and to learn about some of our favorite technologies.

For many teachers, their first foray towards integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into their pedagogical practice comes through the use of digital presentation software (such as Microsoft PowerPoint) as a visual support for their lectures. Nowadays, these digital slideshows are undoubtedly the most common technology in college-level classrooms. This tool has become the norm and teachers who do not use it are becoming few and far between. Presentation software such as PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, LibreOffice Impress and Prezi all have interesting features (with the last two being freely available over the Internet). That said, they also contain shortcomings and traps that should be avoided. This in-depth report presents various uses of presentation software in class along with tips and advice for using slideshows within an educational context.

What is ‘Unlocking Research’?

Unlocking Research is a guide developed by the library staff at the Saint-Lambert Campus of Champlain College to help college level students navigate their way through the research process from the initial definition and development of a research topic to the final citation of sources in the bibliography. Unlike many similar tools, Unlocking Research targets the college level student, avoiding topics such as how to write theses, which are too advanced, and focuses on topics where college students often have difficulties. For example, there is information on how to recognize the elements of a bibliography because college students trying to do a bibliography may not recognize the difference between the article author and the editor of a book or the title of a book and the title of the chapter. Unlocking Research and associated Glossary were created with the help of a grant from the Entente Canada Québec.

The library at Champlain Saint-Lambert has an amazing support from our campus director, Don Shewan. Knowing there were grants available, he came to me a couple of years ago looking for a project idea from the library. I came up with the idea to develop more information literacy tools and videos. Given the impact that we had with our students’ academic successes from that project, I can now expect a phone call asking, “Do you have a project?” whenever funds are available. I therefore need to keep scanning the blogosphere and twittersphere for trends in academic librarianship. This keeps ideas with respect to different technology related projects that could help not only our students but also other colleges and libraries within the province simmering on the back burner.

Action Research in Action

By mid-December 2017, more than 140 students attending 3 colleges had completed 45 action research projects, and in doing so had made a positive contribution to their communities, all the while sharing their experiences with each other, from planning to implementation, using an online platform. All the projects were made possible through the funding provided by ECQ (Entente-Canada Québec).

Google Classroom to Support Sustainable Learning in the Dental Prosthesis Program

I teach in the Dental Prosthesis Program. During the winter session, I give the course Conception et confection de pièces squelettiques II to students in their 4th semester in the program. This course allows them to finish acquiring the skills essential for them to succeed the integration activity. However, the students do not have the opportunity to practice these skills between their 4th and 6th semester of studies. This means that 3rd year students sometimes have difficulty finding theoretical or practical notions from the year before. For this reason, I set out to find both, a way to ensure the safekeeping of course contents and a means of making the content easily accessible to the students.
