Kelly La Venture and Becki George of Northland College Wisconsin presented a workshop on hybrid instruction at the recent Canadian International Conference on Education (CICE) at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia from June 16-19, 2014. After their workshop, in conversation with Profweb’s Norm Spatz, they elaborated on their motivation for creating and teaching hybrid classes. Google Classroom to Support Sustainable Learning in the Dental Prosthesis Program

Julie Jacob Teacher, Cégep Édouard-Montpetit

I teach in the Dental Prosthesis Program. During the winter session, I give the course Conception et confection de pièces squelettiques II to students in their 4th semester in the program. This course allows them to finish acquiring the skills essential for them to succeed the integration activity. However, the students do not have the opportunity to practice these skills between their 4th and 6th semester of studies. This means that 3rd year students sometimes have difficulty finding theoretical or practical notions from the year before. For this reason, I set out to find both, a way to ensure the safekeeping of course contents and a means of making the content easily accessible to the students.

Music, eBooks and Notes at the Tip of Your Fingers!

Ian Murphy Teacher, Cégep de Drummondville

I’ve always been interested in technological advances, especially its contribution towards supporting learning. This interest has influenced my teaching style and my pedagogical approach with students, and has allowed me to find digital solutions to various problems that crop up in the music program.

The Low-Tech Active Learning Classroom at Cégep de Sept-Îles

Sharon Coyle Teacher, Cégep de Sept-Îles

The term active learning classroom usually evokes images of a sleek space packed with all of the latest technological bells and whistles. Not so at Cégep de Sept-Îles. To fit our teaching and learning needs and goals, we consciously opted for a classroom where inter-activity – not technology – plays a central role. This being 2017, of course it doesn’t mean we relegated electronic devices altogether. Here’s the story that explains the “how” and “why” of our low-tech active learning classroom.

Moodle Platform Moderating the CERAC Community of Practice

Orzu Kamolova Moodle Consultant, DECclic
Audrey Corbeil Editor, Profweb
Michel Cloutier Educational Advisor, CERAC Drummondville

At the Sommet sur l’Enseignement supérieur, in February 2013, it was announced that four CERACs (Centre d’expertise en reconnaissance des acquis et des compétences) would be created within the college network. The CEGEPs awarded a CERAC were: Cégep de Drummondville, Cégep de Ste-Foy, Cégep Marie-Victorin and Champlain Regional College. Over the last year, my colleagues and I have worked to design and develop a virtual space for communication and collaboration between these centers using Moodle (LMS). The goal was to create and support an online community of practice. The platform provides a space to bring together hundreds of pedagogical advisors in Recognition of Acquired Competencies (RAC), nearly twenty employees of the four CERACs and representatives from MESRS (Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de la Science).
