Summer School - Mastering Teaching Over the Summer Holidays

The Master Teacher Program (MTP) is a professional development opportunity for teachers. It is a program designed by experienced Cégep teachers for Cégep faculty and other pedagogical staff to help teachers develop professional competencies needed to be a reflective practitioner in college education. In addition, the MTP is unique in that the courses are adapted to suit the Cégep milieu and the needs of college faculty. This program is accredited by the University of Sherbrooke through its Performa program and can be taken in two ways: a diploma or a Master's degree.

Over the last four years the MTP program has transitioned to a blended learning format. Within this new format, MTP participants are offered face-to-face courses with other teachers but are also offered synchronous hours of online and computer-supported interactive activities. These fully blended courses now use a variety of media, tools and methodologies including but not limited to:

  • Web-based videoconferencing for all members of the class
  • Web-based video sessions for the members of the class outside Montreal to allow them to join the face-to-face group in Montreal
  • Videos embedded in documents or emails
  • Class management systems
  • Pair work on Skype
  • YouTube productions
  • Content management tools

In addition, offering a blended format course not only eases the burden of travelling and the costs involved, but has made our program more amenable to other outlying colleges. At present, we have participants in our program from several outlying colleges: Heritage College, Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, Cégep de Sept-Îles, Cégep de Rimouski, Champlain College-Lennoxville, Champlain College-St Lawrence and Cégep St Jean sur Richelieu among others.

This summer we are offering four courses in the program. With an effort to facilitate participants’ advancement through the program, we are launching two courses that will finish in September. This will allow participants to use the summer period, which is usually less stressful, to advance through the program. The additional courses offered for the summer session have increased our registration numbers and several keen participants are enrolled in more than one course. Certainly, offering Dynamics and Diversity in the College Classroom, a 2 credit course, is always popular because it is open to ALL especially those who may just want to sample the program.

In August, we will be celebrating MTP success with a Graduation and Recognition Ceremony at John Abbott College. This MTP Graduation and Recognition Ceremony will honor our M.Ed. (45 credits) graduates and D.E. (30 credits) graduates. We look forward to celebrating with them all. Congratulations to our 32 potential graduates!
